Generic name: carfizomib
● Uses:
Treatment of multiple myeloma (cancer of a type of white blood cell that
produces antibodies that helps fight infection)
● How
it works: Inhibits cancer cell growth
● Most
common side effects: Swelling of the arms and legs, constipation, diarrhea,
nausea, vomiting, low white and red blood cell count, backache, headache,
cough, difficulty breathing, tiredness, fever
● Serious
side effects: Heart failure, heart attack, kidney failure, low white blood
cell count
● Who
cannot use this medication: Have not yet been determined
● Dose:
Available as 60 mg/vial
○ Inject
20 mg/m2/day over 2 to 10 minutes on days 1,2, 8, 9, 16 followed by
a 12 days with no medication (days 17-28)
○ Can
repeat dose again during next 28 days or increase dose to 27mg/m2/day
